Three people have been killed in separate road accidents in Co Galway and Co Cork.

A mother in her 50s and her daughter, who was in her early 20s, died when their car was struck by a trailer on the outskirts of Galway city this morning.

Gardaí believe they were killed when the second of two trailers being towed by a truck became detached and jack knifed across the main Galway Tuam Road at Cloonacauneen.

Both were killed instantly. They are believed to be from the area. Initial reports suggest the woman was taking her daughter to work when the accident occurred.

A man is being held for questioning in connection with the accident at Mill Street Station, where he can be held for up to 12 hours. He is believed to be the driver of the truck which was involved in the accident.

Garda forensic experts are examining the scene of the crash.
