Il Festival degli exploit e dell'eccellenza.

Diciassette anni di storia sono tanti per un Festival. Ne rappresentano la credibilità conquistata ed, al tempo stesso, rendono alte le aspettative di quanti, nella pista od intorno, partecipano all'evento.

Eccellenza autentica: non sorprende che a rappresentare il meglio della tradizione circense italiana siano stati nomi del calibro di Stefano Orfei Nones e Wioris De Rocchi. I due fuoriclasse della pista hanno portato a Latina talento, poesia, brividi ed emozioni. Stefano è apparso fin dal debutto del Giovedì sera fiero, audace, mai stanco di osare e di sorprendere al fianco dei suoi grandi felini. Wioris, dal suo canto, ha restituito alla clownerie più tradizionale quello spessore e quella dimensione malinconica e romantica capace di evocare emozioni. Meritati dunque i due premi speciali loro assegnati ed intitolati alla memoria di Giulio Montico, ideatore del Festival.

Il Festival si è connotato in modo deciso quest’anno per almeno tre aspetti:

1. l’equilibrio dei suoi spettacoli, tra innovazione e tradizione: come non associare alla storia del Circo l’apertura degli spettacoli, affidata ad un numero antichissimo portato in pista da Wioris De Rocchi con il suo cavallino; così come paiono essere proprio “tradizione circense” le parole chiave che meglio descrivono i numeri di verticali presentati dalla giovani, e blasonatissime, Asia Perris e Valeriia Davydenko o la clownerie del portoghese Charlie Carletto. Al tempo stesso sono stati numerosi gli slanci verso la contemporaneità: si pensi al laser-show ed ai droni presentati dall’italiano Laserman; così come del tutto nuove od originali per le piste dei circhi sono apparse le performance di Marco Zoppi con le sue bolle di sapone, il basket acrobatico della Face Team ungherese, le grandi illusioni di Ottavio Belli e l’elegante coreografia di Gabriele Rizzi sull’enorme pianoforte bianco.

2. un deciso rilancio del Circo italiano: il contingente artistico italiano presente al Festival, in gara e fuori concorso, è apparso significativo sia in termini qualitativi che quantitativi: Stefano Orfei Nones e Wioris De Rocchi nella qualità di ospiti d’onore, Asia Perris, Gabriele Rizzi, Laserman, Marco Zoppi, Ottavio Belli e Claudio Vassallo come artisti in gara, hanno assegnato visibilità ed autorevolezza alla produzione italiana circense e di spettacolo; esibizioni differenti tra loro ma accomunate da elevati standard artistici: una vera opportunità di rilancio e di promozione per il Circo e per lo spettacolo dal vivo così come auspicato di recente anche dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali ed il Turismo d’Italia che, negli spot diffusi attraverso la televisione di Stato, annovera il Circo tra le forme d’espressione artistica che fanno grande l’Italia nel mondo.

3. il ruolo dominante delle grandi scuole di Circo: la Cina, la Russia e l’Ucraina continuano a poter vantare di riservare una speciale attenzione alla formazione artistica, ed in particolar modo circense, dei loro giovani talenti. Il primato della Cina quest’anno è parso schiacciante fin dalla prima serata: non solo le prestigiose giurie, ma lo stesso pubblico presente, hanno riservato standing ovation al numero di piramidi umane presentato dalla Troupe di Xinjiang: la loro “morte del cigno” ha letteralmente incantato chiunque abbia avuto la fortuna di assistervi.

Di fatto il Festival si è confermato quale occasione per favorire l'incontro fra le persone in una dimensione di allegria spesso irrintracciabile nella ordinarietà del quotidiano:

1. in tal senso appare notevole l'esito della S. Messa Internazionale animata dai Salesiani di don Bosco, patrono dei circensi. Chapiteau gremito in ogni ordine di posti per una celebrazione che è stata una vera festa: un inno alla gioia ed alla condivisione; la preghiera di ringraziamento conclusiva ha visto la partecipazione dell'artista russo Evgeny Vasilenko che, esibendosi sul filo, ha riproposto in chiave circense lo stile del Don Bosco animatore.

2. Successo significativo anche per il Caffè Letterario condotto dalla giornalista Dina Tomezzoli: l'interesse degli addetti ai lavori così come quello del più ampio pubblico è in assoluta crescita; merito anche del brio assegnato da Dina al suo talk show circense e dell'atmosfera cordiale ed amichevole che autori, ospiti e spettatori hanno potuto condividere attorno alle loro tazzine di caffè.

3. Spazi esauriti anche nell'area dedicata agli stand espositivi di Circus Expo: sono numerosi i fotografi, i pittori e gli artisti di varia estrazione che hanno riempito dei loro colori e del loro talento la piazzetta dell'Expo circense costantemente affollata ad ogni ora di curiosi e visitatori.

International Circus Festival of Italy: un Festival che, sempre più, apre le porte al mondo tendendo la mano a chiunque voglia condividerne il proprio messaggio di gioia.

A margine della diciassettesima edizione del Festival, l’Associazione Culturale “Giulio Montico”, organizzatrice e produttrice dell’evento intende porgere i seguenti ringraziamenti:

1. ai “Gold Partner”, Rosgoscirk, Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey, Circo Knie, per aver sostenuto concretamente il Festival;

2. alle Istituzioni pubbliche (in particolare il Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, il Ministero per gli Affari Esteri e per la Cooperazione Internazionale e le amministrazioni locali), alla Chiesa cattolica (in particolare la Fondazione Migrantes ed il Forum delle Organizzazioni Cristiane per la cura pastorale degli operatori del Circo), agli Enti ed associazioni di categoria (in particolare l’Ente Nazionale Circhi, l’ECA e la Federazione mondiale del Circo) per il supporto riconosciuto;

4. ai membri della Giuria Tecnica Internazionale, presieduta da Istvan Kristof, e della Giuria della Critica, presieduta da Brigitta Boccoli, per avere svolto il loro mandato in modo trasparente ed efficace;

5. agli esperti ed ai “professionisti” del Circo per aver portato a Latina le loro competenze: grazie a Tommy Cardarelli, Andrea Giachi, Ruby Merzari, Fulvio Medini ed ai 7 Maestri d’Orchestra;

6. alla comunità dei Salesiani di Don Bosco di Latina per aver accolto con entusiasmo impareggiabile il nostro invito a celebrare la gioia;

7. alla scuola di spettacolo “L’Anfiteatro” di Latina per aver impreziosito il pre-show di tutti gli spettacoli;

8. a tutte le aziende che, nei vari settori, ed a vario titolo hanno collaborato alla produzione del Festival spesso sostenendo ritmi ed orari di lavoro frenetici;

9. agli sponsor per aver contribuito concretamente alla migliore riuscita dell’evento.

A Festival of artistic excellence and new concepts.

Seventeen years of activity is a long time for any Festival: they represent the standing that the Festival has gained over the years, but also bring the burden of great expectations on the part of whoever takes part in the Festival, whether they be performers or audiences.

Artistic Excellence: It should not surprise us that the traditions of Italian Circus were represented by two famous names: Stefano Orfei Nones and Wioris De Rocchi. These two superb performers brought talent, excitement, sentiment, and thrills to Latina. Stefano was proud, daring, and never afraid to take risks and surprise us with his big cats. Wioris, on the other hand, brought the tender, romantic, and occasionally melancholic side of the art into his traditional clown numbers. The two Giulio Montico special prizes that were awarded to these performers could not have gone to two better recipients.

The Festival distinguished itself this year in at least three distinct aspects:

1. The balance between tradition and innovation: how could we forget the traditions and origins of the Circus as we were watching the enchanting opening number presented by Wioris De Rocchi with his little pony and traditional caravan, or the traditional Circus skills demonstrated by Asia Perris and Valeriia Davydenko, both with hand balance numbers, and the talent of Portuguese clown Charlie Carletto? At the same time, the Festival contained several unusual and innovative numbers: Italian performer Laserman with his spectacular laser and drones number; Italian Marco Zoppi with his fun soap bubbles performance; exhilarating acrobatic basketball players Face Team from Hungary; the big illusions of Italian artist Ottavio Belli; the elegant choreography and execution of Gabriele Rizzi’s pole number atop a white grand piano.

1. A decisive boost for Italian Circus: the Festival contained competing and non-competing Italian performers of great artistic merit: Stefano Orfei Nones and Wioris De Rocchi as special guests, and Asia Perris, Gabriele Rizzi, Laserman, Marco Zoppi, Ottavio Belli and Claudio Vasallo in the competition, lending visibility and prestige to Italian Circus and live performance acts. Each number was unique, but each represented the absolute best of its type, and gave a big boost to Italian Circus and live performance art in general, following the advice of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism to promote Italian live performance art, as shown in their recent TV ads, which included Circus arts as an important part of Italy’s heritage.

1. The dominant role of the great circus schools: China, Russia, and Ukraine continue to draw special attention by virtue of their excellence in youth training programmes geared specifically towards the Circus. China’s win this year did not come as a huge surprise, since both Judges and audiences gave standing ovations to the Xinjiang Troupe right from the first day of performances. Their ‘Dying Swan ‘ number, similar in look and music to Matthew Bourne’s celebrated all-male version of Swan Lake, enthralled everyone who saw it.

The Festival also shows its ability to bring together people from different backgrounds and professions:

1. The success of the International Holy Mass inside the big tent confirms this: celebrated by the Salesian order, whose patron saint is Don Bosco, the Mass was well-attended and turned out to be a very festive occasion. The prayer of thanksgiving at the end was rendered entertaining by the performance of Russian performer Evgeny Vasilenko with his slack wire exhibition.

2. The Literary Café, conducted by journalist Dina Tomezzoli, also enjoyed great success: attendance increased this year, including circus buffs and casual spectators, and thanks also to the light-hearted yet professional way that the event was presented by Dina, who managed to create a cordial and friendly atmosphere between the guests and herself and the other participants, who later shared drinks and refreshments as they chatted about the event.

3. The area dedicated to ‘Circus Expo’ was also fully utilized once again, with many photographers, painters, and artists of various types filling the foyer of the Festival with colourful and interesting works of art, attracting a wide variety of people who were able to enjoy this particular aspect of the Festival at any time of the day.

This Italian Festival, summing up, always offers a welcome to anyone wishing to participate and share in the fun, not only under the big top but also in its immediate vicinity.

The ‘Giulio Montico’ Cultural Association, as organizers and producers of the Festival, wishes to thank the following people and organizations:

Public institutions (in particular the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and for International Cooperation, and local Councils), the Catholic Church (in particular the Migrantes Foundation and the Forum of Christian Organizations for the Pastoral care of Circus and Carnival Workers), the Circus Associations (in particular the National Circus Association, the European Circus Association, and the Fédération Mondiale du Cirque) for all their support.

3. All the performers, for generously sharing their talents with the audiences.

4. The members of the International Technical Jury, headed by Istvan Kristof, and the Critics Jury, headed by Brigitta Boccoli, for their efficient work.

5. The Circus professionals without whom the Festival at Latina could not function: many thanks to Tommy Cardarelli, Andrea Giachi, Ruby Merzari, Fulvio Medini, and also to the 7 members of our official band.

6. The Don Bosco Salesian community for their enthusiastic involvement in celebrating the event.

7. The ‘Anfiteatro’ theatre school of Latina for providing the opening number of each show.

8. Various companies and people involved in different aspects of the production side of the Festival who worked tirelessly in long shifts and frequently tiring circumstances to contribute to the success of the event.

9. The Sponsors, whose contributions were fundamental to the success of the Festival.
